A New York City resident will inevitably confront a winter day when they are craving a walk, but the 18 degree weather forbids it. On such a day, they’ll need to get creative.
A bitter wind whipped the scattered trees on my block. I stared out the window, longing for sunnier Saturdays and battling the desire to leave my apartment. The clouds were bloated and sallow; the hail within pleaded with them for release onto the city below. The sidewalks were slick with ice.
We took the train uptown and battled the elements to reach The Metropolitan Museum of Art. A 20-acre indoor playground stretched ahead of us.
So, we walked.
We turned down unfamiliar hallways at will, wandering until we were lost in the depths of the museum. We strolled through rooms hung with paintings of forests and oceans as a winter storm ravaged the streets. Marble Romans towered overhead, looking on as we toured their home. Monet and Picasso painted our surroundings for hours. The conversation meandered with our feet as the sky faded from gray to black.
