A pianist’s fingers dance across the keys. The tune floats from the instrument to the surrounding air to greet each pluck of a string and stroke of a cymbal. The notes twirl and intertwine with one another, enveloping the audience. Candles flicker throughout the room. They bathe the music in a warm glow. A disco ball hangs from the ceiling, reflecting a soft shimmer onto the brick walls as it pirouettes. I take a sip of red wine and admire the red roses on our table as a saxophonist climbs to the stage.

14 feet above, the streets of New York City are alive. Taxis glide over rain-soaked avenues. Pedestrians mingle on the sidewalk with umbrellas in hand. They’re strangers to the music that dances one story below them.

I close my eyes. The room cradles me until the curtain closes.
